While hemp protein may contain more total fat than many other protein powders, it should be stressed that almost all of this fat comes from the essential polyunsaturated fatty acids Omega-6 and Omega-3. Hemp is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as having what is considered to be an optimal 3:1 balance of omega-6 to omega-3 essential fatty acids.
Unlike hemp protein powder, many soy isolate powders that are not labeled organic are often processed with hexane, a petroleum solvent that has adverse impacts on the environment as well as on human health. The resulting hexane-processed soy is utilized in many soy protein powders, cereals, and bars. Hemp protein powder is produced using only cold-pressed techniques and does not involve the use of hexane in the production process. It is the same technique that ensures valuable vitamins and minerals are not destroyed during processing.
Perhaps the most important difference between soy and hemp seed protein powders is that the non-organic soy beans used in many soy products are often derived from genetically modified soy beans. Hemp is never genetically modified. Hemp foods also have low environmental impacts because growing hemp seed does not require the addition of herbicides or pesticides.
In Chinese hospital trials, hempseed protein powder has been given to patients to speed up their recovery time, assisting in tissue and wound healing.
The more facts that emerge about hemp food, the more baffled we are that the government has not changed the legislation to allow hemp food for human consumption in Australia, when 30 other countries do allow it. Still more baffling after reading the Hansard discussions on hemp.
Most politicians from all parties appear to be in favor of hemp with a few voicing concerns that hemp and marijuana crops and products are too similar in appearance and will make policing the industry too difficult. Also they fear marijuana growers will hide their crops amongst industrial hemp crops. Silly thing to do, as plants cross pollinate, reducing THC in marijuana plants and may raise THC in industrial hemp plants. Growers of either plant dont want this to happen as it will make their crops unsaleable. Crops do have a different appearance, industrial hemp plants are tall, spindly with few lower leaves and the crop is very dense, as seen in this photo.
Happy Planet guarantees no THC in their hemp food by testing at the Government Forensic and Testing Laboratory. Overseas, 10ppm (parts per million) THC is the maximum level in hemp food. When the level is 4ppm or lower, THC is considered not detected.
The benefits of growing hemp are many and there is no shortage of farmers wanting to grow hemp in preference to other crops. So, what is the reason that the legislation for hemp food has not changed?
Keep sending letters to your State Minister for Health and recruit friends to do the same. It will keep the subject on the Ministers mind and one day soon, they will come up with a bright idea and say, wow, industrial hemp food is fantastic, everybody should eat this.
A letter is below for you to add your details or edit with your comments and email or post to your Minister. A list of state health ministers follows the letter. If you know of a doctor, nutritionist, dietitian, celebrity or anyone with a high profile who is passionate about hemp food, ask them to join our the association and hemp food lobby team. We very much appreciate your assistance in lobbying thank you.
TO: State Health Minister
I want to buy industrial hempseed food, but I am told that it is not legal for human consumption in Australia and I am told that Australia and New Zealand are the last two western countries in the world to legalize hempseed food. Naturopaths, sports trainers, body builders, many health books and health websites now recommend hempseed food for many ailments. Overseas, hempseed food is in a variety of foods and sold in shops and hemp restaurants. Hempseed food is highly nutritious, non-allergenic and is easily digested by humans.
Canadian hemp food sales were estimated at US$30 million (Dec. 2006-Dec. 2007). Sales were boosted that year by 55% when hemp milk was put on the market. Hemp is a proven economically viable crop.
The seed is cold-pressed for the oil and the remaining seed is called hemp meal. The hemp meal can then be milled into flour and/or protein powder. The flour is approximately 30% protein (omega 3, 6 and 9) and 35% dietary fibre plus minerals. The protein powder is an excellent source of protein, especially for vegetarians. Hempseed oil is especially healing for people with eczema, psoriasis and other dry skin problems and it can be applied directly to the skin. In some cases, people find hempseed oil is the only treatment that improves their skin disease. Industrial hemp can not only be manufactured into food, but textile, building materials, bio-fuel, plastic, skin care, animal bedding and food, and paper.
Industrial hemp is the most efficient carbon sequestering crop grown all over the world and absorbs about 1.7 times its dry weight of CO2. Over thousands of years, hemp has become naturally resistant to most pests and does not require herbicides. It can produce everything that trees and cotton produce and most products produced from petrochemical oil can be produced from hemp oil. Hemp yields 4 times that of trees and twice that of cotton. Hemp takes only 120 days to grow, compared to trees that take 5-20 years to grow for harvesting.
Hemp must NOT be confused with marijuana. The level of THC (the psychoactive ingredient that gets people high) is so low in industrial hemp 1%, that it has no effect if smoked. If marijuana plants are planted in a crop of industrial hemp, they cross-pollinate and reduce the THC in marijuana and give no high effect when smoked. A Queensland hempseed processing companys hemp food was tested at the Queensland Government Scientific & Forensic Testing Services Laboratory and no THC was detected.
Please consider the legislation of hempseed food for human consumption in Australia.
