We are into April already, and what a difficult start to the year it was, in more ways than one. Firstly, the Australian oil and meal we received was not up to food grade standard and we had no choice but to reject it, as we only provide quality food to our customers. If Happy Planet staff and family will not eat a product, then we don’t sell it. There was no more hemp food available in Australia, so we ordered oil and meal from New Zealand. When the shipment did arrive into Brisbane port, AQIS inspectors delayed inspection for 10 days.
I had no idea how many obstacles I would come up against when I began working in the hemp industry over two years ago. I thought I could change the hemp food legislation within a year, how wrong I was!
Even with my knowledge of benefits from eating hemp food, I am still amazed at the results customers obtain from hemp food. I feel privileged to be able to work in such a company and provide such an incredible food and that clients ring me and share the benefits of hemp food. If only the powers that be, would acknowledge this and stop dictating to the general public what they can and cannot put into their bodies.
Happy Planet and customers all know the benefits of hemp, but we need to convince the government of the benefits so that they will legalize hempseed food for human consumption in Australia. You can help us by writing a letter to your local or state Health Minister. The below draft letter can be sent as is, or you may like to add your thoughts as well. Your help is much appreciated in this endeavor.

I want to buy industrial hempseed food for my good health, but I am told that Australia is the last western country in the world to legislate hemp food for human consumption and it is only sold as pet food in Australia. Yet 30 other countries around the world passed legislation allowing hemp food for human consumption including America in 2004. So, when I am overseas I can buy and consume industrial hemp food in many forms, but not here in Australia. Hemp food is very nutritious and useful in alleviating many ailments and it is non-allergenic and gluten free. It is highly recommended by many health and sports professionals. There is no THC in hemp food, it is not a drug. There is no THC in hemp seed or marijuana seed, so I do not know why the government refuse to change the legislation when hemp food is so beneficial for humans and animals.
I, the under signed support the Australian Industrial Hemp Industry in lobbying the Federal and State Governments to alter the Food Standards Australia & NZ legislation to allow the production, consumption and marketing of Industrial Hemp Food products in Australia. I request that the Government act to support and assist in the establishment of a sustainable Industrial Hemp Food Industry in Australia and stop denying the general public access to a nutritious, safe food.
